My First Trip to Tibet As soon as I got off the plane, I was utterly amazed by the brilliant blue sky of Lhasa. At an altitude of 3,650 meters, it's highly recommended to take some time to acclimatize to the environment and avoid strenuous exercise. This "place closest to heaven" deserves to be savored slowly. We visited some of the most famous attractions in Lhasa. The Potala Palace is an essential destination in Tibet, renowned not only as the "Pearl on the Roof of the World" but also as a national 5A-level tourist attraction. Located in the old town of Lhasa, Barkhor Street boasts a history of over 1,300 years and serves as the most vibrant shopping street around Jokhang Temple. It's a perfect place to wander, shop, and immerse yourself in authentic Tibetan culture. Monasteries are must-see attractions in Tibet! We visited Drepung Monastery, Jokhang Temple, among others. Drepung Monastery, the largest in Tibet, once housed more than 10,000 monks. Its name means "rice pile" in Tibetan, referring to the white buildings clustered along the hillside. It holds the highest status in the Gelug sect. At Jokhang Temple, you can observe many pilgrims praying and performing kora around the temple. Norbulingka is situated to the west of Lhasa, not far from the Potala Palace. As the former royal garden of Tibet, it features lush plants and traditional buildings nestled among tall trees. Strolling along the stone paths, you can appreciate the tranquil atmosphere—a rare experience in Tibet, especially at such high altitudes. It's important to note that foreign visitors cannot travel to Tibet independently and must make arrangements through a local travel agency. Fortunately, I joined an excellent tour group with a Tibetan guide who was highly professional, fluent in English, and greatly enhanced our understanding of Tibetan history and culture. Communication was smooth throughout the journey, making the trip relaxed and worry-free. It was truly the trip of a lifetime!
